Rayleigh is an historic market town, situated in South Essex.

The town has kept much of its traditional character and is a vibrant shopping centre, well connected by public transport.  Rayleigh has a train station that is on the Liverpool Street line to London.


Rayleigh has been an established settlement for hundreds of years and  is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The manor of Rayleigh belonged to Sweyne of Essex, the son of Robert FitzWimarc.

Notable places within Rayleigh include the site of what was a Motte and Bailey castle that belonged to Sweyne of Essex, the son of Robert FitzWimarc. This site is known as Rayleigh Mount and is today owned and maintained by the National Trust. From this vantage point there are great views across the Crouch Valley.

Another landmark in the town is the Rayleigh Windmill which is over 200 years old.  It is a museum and popular venue for weddings. Rayleigh also has an 18th Century octagonal Dutch Cottage and the beautiful Holy Trinity Church. 

The market that is held on  Wednesday mornings and dates back to 1181, when it was registered in the Records of Henry II.

The origin of the word "Rayleigh" is said to come from two Anglo-Saxon words, "Roe", a deer, and "leigh" a clearing. 

Another historical fact concerning Rayleigh is that King Henry VIII, had a hunting park and lodge in the town.

The population of Rayleigh in the 2011 census was 32,150.
